FBI Promotes SPLC While Board Member Honors Cop Killer

The FBI is promoting the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center, even though the group’s leaders have written for the Communist Party, honored a convicted cop-killer, and praised a radical anti-American terrorist who planted bombs at the Pentagon, the U.S. Capitol, and police stations.

The FBI’s official web site displays a page on “hate crimes” that provides a direct Internet link to the SPLC’s own web site. That’s where anti-American terror bomber Bill Ayers, leader of the ’60s-era militant Weather Underground terrorist organization that planted bombs targeting police stations, is praised as “fighting for social justice” and described as a “highly respected figure” who has “developed a rich vision.”

Ayers told the New York Times in 2011, “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.” Ayers is described by SPLC as a Vietnam War-era “anti-war activist,” even though Ayers, far from opposing the war, actively worked for Communist North Vietnam’s victory over the U.S. His political manifesto, “Prairie Fire” is dedicated to Sirhan Sirhan, the convicted assassin of Robert F. Kennedy. He said he considers himself a “small c” communist.

SPLC “senior fellow” Mark Potok, director of the group’s “intelligence project,” has written for the Communist Party’s official online publication, the People’s World.

SPLC’s friendliness with Ayers is not the organization’s only association with cop-haters. SPLC board member James Rucker apparently has a soft spot for cop-killers. Rucker is founder and chairman of ColorofChange.org, which vows to honor the memory of convicted cop-killer Troy Davis who was executed by the state of Georgia for the murder of police officer Mark MacPhail in Savannah. In an email to members signed by Rucker, ColorofChange said it was “saddened to have to report that the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole refused to grant clemency for Troy Davis…” Rucker’s ColorofChange said on its homepage, “Rest in peace, Troy. We honor your memory by continuing the work.”

Last August a 28-year-old gay-rights volunteer named Floyd Corkins entered the office lobby of the Family Research Council (FRC), a Christian traditional-values group headquartered in Washington that condemns homosexual conduct and opposes same-sex marriage. Corkins took a gun from his backpack and fired three shots at building manager Leo Johnson, one of them wounding the unarmed Johnson in the arm before he wrested the gun from Corkins. On February 6 Corkins pleaded guilty to three felonies: committing an act of terrorism while armed, interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition (he had bought the weapon in Virginia), and assault with intent to kill while armed.

A relatively small distortion often indicates a web of falsehood.

The Summer 2003 “Intelligence Report” of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) contains a diatribe by George Ewert against Ronald Maxwell’s recent film, Gods and Generals. His charges include:

“‘Gods and Generals’ is part of a growing movement that seeks to rewrite the history of the American South, downplaying slavery and the economic system that it sustained.”
Gods and Generals “has two black characters, but they are wildly unrepresentative of blacks in the South of that period. One, Martha, is a slave who remains in her master’s house after his family flees so that she can protect it from the ravages of Union troops. The other, a freedman named Jim who volunteers to be Gen. Jackson’s camp cook and mumbles in clichéd black dialect, is similarly depicted as a loyal Southerner.”

Having seen Gods and Generals, I must conclude that Ewert either has not seen it or suffers from memory loss.

Overblown Threat on the Right

EVEN before the blood was fully mopped up from Wednesday’s shooting at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, the left began shouting “We told you so.”

Homeland Security’s gumshoes, we’re told, were right all along about “right-wing extremists” and Jew-and-black-hating terrorists lurking behind lampposts and posing the chief US security threat.

That, in fact, is what DHS suggested in its controversial April report. And Wednesday’s attack, in which allegedly longtime anti-Semitic white supremacist James W. von Brunn shot and killed a museum guard, is supposed to prove the case.

Those of us who know and love the Southern Poverty Law Center [SPLC, or more appropriately, in VDARE.com's considered opinion, the $PLC] have been naturally intrigued to see if this wealthy operation would be a victim of Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

After all, so many other Jewish-linked charities were: for example, the Robert I. Lappin Foundation, The Chais Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union—not to mention poor Elie Wiesel’s foundation. The Madoff massacre was remarkably sweeping.
